Scheduled sectional/unit exams:  Prior arrangements to make up sectional/unit exams should be done in consultation with the Instructor.  (They are solely at the discretion of the Instructor). A program participant who misses an exam because of illness or excused personal reasons should contact the Instructor to indicate the problem and receive a suggested time for make-up.  The make-up exam must be taken within two weeks of the missed exam.  Any additional time is solely at the discretion of the Instructor.

Report of Grades

The Institute may withhold a grade report of any present or former participant if financial obligations are outstanding.

Grievance Procedures

In accordance with the practice of biblical precedent, all Program Participant's complaints and concerns regarding academic matters will be dealt with in the following manner: The student is first to contact in writing the Instructor of the course in which the concern has arisen. The two are then to seek to understand the situation and to bring about a resolution. If the program participant is not accepting of the resolution proposed by the Instructor, then the participant is to contact the Emmaus Institute to establish a time when the participant, the Instructor, and the Dean can meet to discuss the situation.  If the participant is not satisfied with the results of this meeting, then an appeal should be made to the President of the Emmaus Institute.

Financial Obligations

Credit for grades will not be effective in the Registrar's Office until satisfactory agreement concerning financial obligations has been made with the Business Office.

Standards of Christian Conduct

The Emmaus Institute International enrollees are expected to live according to the high standards of conduct befitting a Christian minister.

Institute's Policy on Plagiarism

The Institute includes plagiarism as one type of unacceptable conduct.

Definition of Plagiarism

Enrollees are given the task of writing papers to help them learn how to think critically about the ideas of others and to present the result of their analysis in a readable form. Plagiarism defeats these purposes by cheating the student out of an opportunity to grow. Plagiarism is, therefore, a failure to distinguish between the work of the student and the work of others, either intentionally or unintentionally.  It may take several forms:

  • Taking one or more sentences verbatim from a source and inserting it into a paper without the proper citation obviously is plagiarism. The student should note that a failure to document credit for a direct quotation is also a violation of copyright law.
  • Representing the words or ideas of another person as your own words or ideas is plagiarism, even if you summarize.  Moreover, paraphrasing a sentence without proper citation is also plagiarism. Borrowing without proper citation such things as an outline, an idea, or an approach to dealing with a problem that is unique to an author is plagiarism. This type of plagiarism often results from poor note taking on the part of the student.
  • Plagiarism also can result from improper methods of citation.  The student is responsible for learning the appropriate rules for citing sources and for following those rules throughout the paper.  Ignorance of the rules of citation is not an excuse.
  • For other definitions of plagiarism and ways to avoid it see Robert A. Harris, The Plagiarism Handbook: Strategies for Preventing, Detecting, and Dealing with Plagiarism (Los Angeles, CA: Pyrczak Publishing).

Consequences for Violations of Plagiarism

When an Instructor discovers that a student has committed plagiarism, the Instructor should report this violation to the Academic Dean.  In making this report, a copy of the paper in question will be supplied to the Dean for the purpose of documentation. A letter of warning will be issued from the Dean's Office to the student notifying him or her of the violation.  This letter will serve as the official notice of the violation. A copy will be placed in the student's file, along with the copy of the student's paper.  Copies of the letter will be forward to the Registrar, Instructor, and the President.  This letter will clearly state that if the student plagiarizes a second time, at theS discretion of the President, the offense may result in the student's dismissal from the Institute.
